(More customer reviews)The grip is an accessory you should have for this camera. I do have larger hands, so holding the camera is a bit uncomfortable. But with the grip it helps out a lot.
Benefits of it: Can put in 2 battery packs to have lots of shooting time without switching. Also there are camera controls (trigger and other controls) on it which allow you to shoot vertical pictures without having to twist your hands.
While it adds some weight, the camera is actually too light for my taste. Adding this to it helps keep my shots steadier without having to rely too much on IS lenses.
I also had the appropriate grip on my Canon Rebel XTi and never took it off for years.
There is also an adapter included that will take AA batteries if you are desperate for power and forgot your charger.
